North American 15 mm Terrain | Hobby & Season of Scenery

Apologies to all my readers and the wonderful folks who leave comments on here and post on their own blogs. This has been perhaps one of the busiest times of my life since probably my university years. Sometimes it comes down to such little time that I have to pick between writing on the blog or even getting any of the hobbying done. I have managed to sneak in a few projects though, like this batch of terrain for Black Powder. I even got a game in, but that's for another post. 

Tyranid Hormagaunts | Hobby

It's been a long time since I've done an type of army painting. Most of what I've done has been one off models or skirmish warbands. So it took me a little longer than I was expecting to churn through 10 of these hormagaunts. Really makes me look forward to when they immediately get wiped off the board in turn 1 of a game. 

Hobby | Black Seas HMS Indefatigable

It's been a wild time over at the Space Dino household, mostly because I actually own a house now. Lots of my time has been spent getting things moved over, but, for the first time in a very long time, I have an official hobby space and room to lay out my things. Which will make it a lot easier to access things in the future as I don't have to go looking for them in boxes. This has also been the reason I haven't been keeping up with everyone's blogs, but now that I don't have to spend every waking moment moving things and unpacking boxes and lifting furniture I have no business moving, things should get into a groove again. So, for the first post of the year, I have HMS Indefatigable, a ship famous for her duel against a much larger ship than herself. 

 

Hobby | Black Seas La Princesa

Uh what a whirlwind of a time it's been for me, I won't get into details, but I will say that it's been very busy here. I've finally gotten around to finishing La Princesa, a model I started way back in August after I wrapped up the Lake Erie project. Hopefully, the next thing I do won't take anywhere near as long. But back to the subject at hand. 

Hobby | Black TIE Event

Thanks to Andor season 2 (seriously go watch it) I've had a strong desire to finish up my Star Wars backlog. One of those projects that's just been sitting there is this pile of First Order TIE Fighters (TIE/fo) that I've had lying around. I had a total of eight of them, which unless I'm going to play Epic (I'm not), is more than I'd ever need for a standard list which can only support a maximum of 8 models. However, I only have a single special forces TIE Fighter (TIE/sf). So I've been letting these guys sit while I waited for an idea to strike on how to achieve the conversion. I finally decided that there's not a whole lot I'd have to do to make them look the part, so I just went ahead and experimented with a couple of materials to make them into budget TIE/sf.

Hobby | Blue Squadron Standing By

I can't let Dave have all of the Star Wars fun. I was originally intending for this to coincide with May the 4th, but life being what it is I was a little late. I've had a great time with Andor Season 2 (seriously, go watch it), so I've been in the mood for all things Star Wars. I've hade these 3D prints for New Republic E-Wings laying around for a while, and I have a plethora of spare X-Wings, so I went ahead and started painting Blue Squadron. 

Hobby | Ye Olde Telegraph

Amazingly, somewhere in between Oblivion Remastered sessions and baby care, I've got some painting in. Not for the Battle of Lake Erie though; I've done so many schooners that I was in a mood to do something completely different. Something that's great about naval wargaming is that terrain isn't a necessity, other than an ocean mat. Staring at an empty ocean isn't all that fun either though. While I like what Warlord has on offer in terms of terrain, I've turned to Hagen Miniatures, a German company, for this particular venture. Their catalogue has a plethora of terrain, accessories, and even ships that are all in scale with the Warlord range. What we have here is a Chappe telegraph diorama. 

Hobby | Black Seas Bomb Ketch

Before diving further into my Lake Erie project, I need to wrap up the last model I haven't posted about on here from the Analogue Hobby Challenge. This is a Bomb Ketch, a ship made for launching mortar shells at land targets, although in game, you could try to target a ship. But good luck with that. 

Hobby | Stop, Martello Time

One thing that's really easy about naval wargaming is that the terrain can be really easy; just throw down a blue cloth and you're done. That doesn't mean that there's no terrain either though. A lot of naval actions happened fairly close to shore, or involved land elements as well. That includes these little guys known as Martello Towers, which is a misspelling of the Italian martella, or hammer. 

Hobby | Black Seas American Brig

With the Necromunda campaign wrapping up soon and a lull in the action as we look towards another Mordheim campaign, I’ve been venturing back into the world of Black Seas. I have another brig painted up, this time for the American side of things. However, I didn’t paint this up in the “official” US Navy color scheme, instead opting for a more generic look befitting a privateer or a merchant ship pressed into service with the fledgling navy. 

Hobby | Lost Tombs of Hakir Terrain (Spooktober)

In what is perhaps the quickest turnaround for miniatures for me, I received my Reaper Miniatures Bones 6 Kickstarter a few days ago, and then managed to paint all of the terrain in the Lost Tombs of Hakir expansion box. This is a desert themed expansion, more specifically Egyptian, more specifically a fantasy Egypt. It comes with lots of Egypt themed enemies, NPCs, and heroes. What I was really here for was the terrain, as I thought it would make a nice addition to my collection (hehe). 

Hobby | Tiny Houses

Unfortunately for myself, I didn't complete more of these little buildings in time for the Season of Scenery challenge. Nonetheless, they are done for myself, so a win is still a win. These 3 buildings are a continuation of my previous post, where I started with 15mm ACW. They're MDF buildings from Sarissa Precision. More precisely, a dutch style barn, a stable barn, and a house. 

Hobby | Barn Storming (Season of Scenery)

Well it happened. I have, ironically after posting about it not too long ago, met the requirements for truly starting historical wargaming. There is a little Space Dino on the way. They have timed it perfectly with my local game store's anniversary sale, and so I scooped up a little something. Something about the best Civil War. And of course, with the little time remaining in the Season of Scenery challenge, I had to get some terrain in. It can't all be vehicles. 

Hobby | Something a Little Different

I've recently passed around the sun a total of 30 times, so now that I have become an old man, it's time for my hobby to get serious. I don't have kids yet though, so I'm legally not allowed to get into historical wargaming yet. This model was a gift from a friend, from the Lindberg line of models, not that I know what that means. This guy is an XB-70, the supersonic strategic bomber the US Air Force came up with back in the golden age of aviation. 

Hobby | Action Hero Pose Skaven

The fancy knights of Bretonnia, and the dirtier peasants, can't be getting all the attention. After all, they weren't even the first project this year that was set in the Old World. Nope, we're back to our Skaven content. This time we've got another hero for the warband, 1 of the 2 Black Skaven that I'm allowed in the warband. 

Hobby | Totally not a Paladin for D&D

Recently I’ve been painting up lots of Skaven for Mordheim, and that's meant that I've had a lot of reds and blacks and cream colors left on my palette. I also had this guy sitting around half painted, and guess what? The paint recipe calls for lots of reds and blacks and creams. Huzzah for efficiency! 

Hobby | Sneaky Stab Kill

My Eshin Skaven warband continues to grow, and this time, we have the head honcho of this whole operation: the Assassin Adept. In reality, this model is a Deathmaster from the Age of Sigmar line, but they're basically the same model.  

Hobby | A Conjurer of Cheap Tricks

Since I'm basically an expert at playing Skaven in Mordheim now, I feel comfortable settling down with the warband and throwing some paint on some models. First up I have this Eshin Sorcerer, who is converted from a Grey Seer who would normally sit atop a Screaming Bell. Whether or not this is a demotion or promotion for this particular rat is up to the reader. 

Hobby | 3-D Printed Star Wars Armada Squadrons

While November has been a slow month for me, hobby-wise, it hasn't been entirely devoid of minis. I enjoyed my foray into unofficial Star Wars Armada territory, so I gave it another go, this time with some of the squadrons: a Republic LAAT/i Gunship, Naboo N-1 Starfighters, and CIS HMP Droid Gunship. 

Hobby | Murkillor the Wraith King (Spooktober/Apocalypse Me)

Spooktober keeps on giving, and we are firmly back in fantasy land (sorry space) with another creature meant for the apocalyptic fantasy scape of Verrotwood (or Dungeons & Dragons, it works there too). This is a figure from Reaper Miniatures, which was available in their Bones V Kickstarter. The official name is Murkillor the Wraith King, but I intend to use him as a ghostly entity that inhabits dark ruins within the Verrotwood.
