Well it happened. I have, ironically after posting about it not too long ago, met the requirements for truly starting historical wargaming. There is a little Space Dino on the way. They have timed it perfectly with my local game store's anniversary sale, and so I scooped up a little something. Something about the best Civil War. And of course, with the little time remaining in the Season of Scenery challenge, I had to get some terrain in. It can't all be vehicles.
What I scooped up was the (big breath) Black Powder Epic Battles American Civil War Starter Set, by Warlord Games. Not the little Guts & Glory starter set, or the Gettysburg battle set. The big one, with 12 sprues each for the Union and Confederacy, with full rule book and starter pamphlet. For 50% off, I kinda had to. This is about 4 brigades worth for each side, but I plan to use 3 stands of models per standard battalion instead of the recommended 5, which will give me even more to play with.
The box also came with this nifty little 15 mm scale farmhouse, complete with snake fences. It was very quick to build and paint, and so I had it ready to go the afternoon I opened the box. It was quite fun to have something so simple to paint. A nice little break from the more complicated fantasy terrain I've had.
One thing I'm looking forward to playing in 15 mm is the size: it looks like a proper army. 28 mm just looks like a skirmish. This will look more like armies duking it out with each other. Once I get a bit more of the Black Seas done, I'll probably transition to getting Black Powder on the table for a little bit, then back over to the Old World to get the game ready to play.

Great looking building SD, not that there is anything wrong with vehicles, but it is good to break the mould from time to time ! LOL

DeleteLook at you Napoleonics and now ACW , I'd be interested how you find Black powder, I liked it but there is also Valour and Fortitude which is a free download from the Perry miniatures site and they're doing ACW now too?

Haha yes I've jumped right in with the historicals. I haven't played a game yet, but reading through the rules it seems fun, although the command movements seem like they could be a bit swingy. Nice shout out with those rules, I'll take a look at them!

Once you start historical gaming it’s only a short step before you shake your fist at youngsters at complain about how the rain makes your knees hurt…
