It's been a long time since I've done an type of army painting. Most of what I've done has been one off models or skirmish warbands. So it took me a little longer than I was expecting to churn through 10 of these hormagaunts. Really makes me look forward to when they immediately get wiped off the board in turn 1 of a game.
These are the older models, I couldn't tell you what edition they're from, but they're not the 10th edition update. They're quite top heavy for such a little base, which is a constant problem with these guys from what I've gathered. I had to add cut up pennies to the bases until they had a semblance of balance.
I followed the same scheme that I established with the Tyranid Prime, although with less accoutrements the hormagaunts were a little easier and quicker to paint.
Compared to the new termagants that I just started painting, the older models are much faster to paint. I don't mean to sound like "that guy", I genuinely think the newer models are nicer, but damn are there so many more areas to cover, and at a smaller scale.
The ribs on the older models are about the width of my brush, so one pass and it's done, no cleaning. On the termagants they're about half the thickness, which now necessitates slower, more intentional painting. Across a whole army that does really start to add up. The irony of course is that you can barely see any of the ribs in any of these photos, so you definitely won't see them when viewing them from above...
Anyways, enough yelling at clouds. Here's a little bit better of a view of the spores I put on the bases.
I'm happy that the scheme looks just as a good on a unit as it does on a character, so I'll be keeping this going. Taken together they do really merge into one seething tide, which perfectly lines up with their lore.

Excellent unit of Gaunts SD, the color scheme translated well to a unit, I believe it was 4th edition when we got plastic gaunts, so well over 25 years ago. as for the difference in rib size, the old ones were sculpted in what was called 3 up's, and the new ones are all 3D rendered which is why the details have become shallower.
