Hobby | A Wendigo for Verrotwood (Spooktober/Apocalypse Me 2023)

You may think with all of the Star Wars recently that I have forgotten about the fantasy side of things. As with many things in life, it's seasonal. And speaking of seasons, we are entering that most wonderful time of the year. No, not you Christmas. Fall. The cooling temperatures, the falling leaves, the mysterious, concerning creatures hiding in the woods....

Yup. It's Spooktober, and we kick things off in the middle of the month (hey, I've been busy) with a spooky creature from Archon Studio. This little guy came in the same box as the Peryton from a little bit ago, and as was the case with that model, I wanted to incorporate some different painting techniques with this one. The skin in particular was a mix of glazing and strong, visible brush strokes, instead of the usualy blending and layering. It helps give a very pale, fleshy look.

The cloth was given some texture as well, again by leaving visible brush strokes. Instead of layering with long sweeps of paint along the edge, I did a little bit of hatcheting to give it a rough, scratchy cloth look. This warmer tone also contrasts nicely with the pale skin, while giving some color that evokes a dry autumn day.

I intend to use this eventually for Verrotwood (see below), a neat skirmish game set in a fantasy apocalypse where the old god has died or abandoned the local population, who, in their desperation, turn to various cults for survival. Monsters play a key part in the gameplay, and so this fine fellow will fit in nicely, although he would be just as comfortable in a D&D situation if the moment calls out for it. I would highly recommend to pick up the PDF, which can be bought quite affordably on Wargame Vault

This also lets me claim this model as part of WTW's current challenge, Zomtober/Apocalypse Me 2023. Check out his blog for his excellent work and contributions from other members of the community.

  1. A very creepy looking Wendigo SD, the colours you've used give it a convincing otherworldly feel to the whole piece.
