Get your brushes and clippers, and welcome to the Space Dinosaur Hobby Table, where I cover what I've completed recently in the Age of Sigmar hobby, along with a mini-review of the sculpts, how easy they're to paint, and any tips or tricks I can pass on to make your life easier. As I mentioned in the last post, we continue our terrain adventure through the Reaper Miniatures Bones V Kickstarter.
As I mentioned, this particular ruin is from the encounter set Spiders of Emrith Kul from Reaper Miniatures. A nice bit of terrain for a good price. This isn't the first time that Reaper Miniatures terrain has appeared on this blog, as I painted the Ravenhome Ruins and the gatehouse from Gallowgard. This, being a Bones model from Reaper, suffers some of the same issues as the rest of the line: warping and imprecise connections. Luckily, a lot of that is resolved with some hot water, but as you'll see in the next post, that doesn't always fix the issue.
In this case however, I was able to get rid of most of the warping. Something really nice about Reaper is that you can basically start painting right away, as the plastic is formulated not to require priming. I kept the scheme very simple, starting with a very dark gray and then working my way up to white highlights. It was a very fast paint session, and it's nice to be able to do that after painting so many details.
The statue isn't attached to the model, so you can remove it and leave an empty pedestal. Sadly, the space isn't quite large enough to support a 25 mm base, but you can make it work. This definitely makes a nice bit of scatter terrain that you can use in a variety of miniatures games.
Now for my overall thoughts on the models, I will judge it based on two categories. Firstly, the sculpt itself will be scored on a scale of 0 to 10, with 5 being average, 0 horrendous, and 10 a marvel. For a reference point, I consider the Stormcast Liberator to be a 5, neither great nor bad. Just a passable, average model. Then I will score on Ease of Painting, between 1 and 5, 1 being a slog to paint and 5 being a breeze.
My Ruins of Emrith Kul review:
Sculpt: 8/10
There's a lot of character in this model that adds a forlorn, spooky aspect to a table top. There's some nice detailing with the spider eggs and bones, and the railing draws the eye towards the center where the statue stands. The warping takes some points off of this one, but for the price it's hard to beat.
Ease of Painting: 5/5
The simplicity of the sculpt makes it easy to paint and easy to read, lending itself well to beginner painters.
Final tips: A make-up brush makes an excellent drybrush, and gives the highlights a softer, more natural tone.

Definitely a spooooky sculpt and bit of terrain. Looks like something that might be found in Murkwood forest:: especially with the spider web wrapped man. Nice job on the model. 😀
ReplyDeleteThanks! They definitely designed this piece with Murkwood in mind, the full set came with a halfling and some spiders.
