Gaming Table: D&D Dragon of Icespire Peak Campaign (Part 2)

Pull up a chair and roll some dice, welcome to the Space Dinosaur Gaming Table, where I cover Age of Sigmar battle reports to list building ideas and everything in between. In this episode, our brave Dungeons and Dragons adventurers are tackling the next two missions of the excellent Dragon of Icespire Peak starter campaign: Butterskull Ranch and Moutain's Toe Gold Mine.

Dragon of Icespire Peak: Butterskull Ranch

After the adventuring party defeated the furies attacking Umbrage Hill, they set off to town to resupply and find their next mission. On the way to town, they encountered a wandering cow, which led then led them to Butterskull Ranch. Hearing the screams of villagers, they quickly scrambled over the hill, noticing a raiding party of Iron Golems (I had no orc models so these would do). The party pushed to climb over the makeshift barricades set up by the golems, killing one of the weaker ones in the process. With some ground made, they continued to advance to the cottage. Unfortunately, one of the villagers was already dead.

Smashing into the cottage they found Alfonse himself tied to a chair. Killing the captors proved difficult, with Elrond knocked unconscious again, but the party proved victorious. Once untied, the owner proved grateful and offered up some gold and the location of a nearby gold mine, one which was supposedly uninhabited and ripe for the plundering.

Dragon of Icespire Peak: Mountain's Toe Gold Mine

And so the adventures found themselves heading to Mountain's Toe Gold Mine, hoping to scoop up some easy loot. Alas, they found the caverns absolutely crawling with Skaven! Theoden and Elrond split from Tim, following the left corridor. Tim was able to fight off a large chunk of clanrats, and after scavenging through some barrels found shards of warpstone and a wizard's hat, which granted him the ability to cast spells. Meanwhile, the rest of the team was facing down a team of clanrats and a Warpfire Thrower. Luckily for them, the Warpfire Thrower exploded, killing a fair chunk of the other Skaven with it. All except one.

The party reunited, and having tied the remaining clanrat to the chair, fed him some of the warpstone and brainwashed him into joining the team. His name is now Marshall, disciple of Tim. The four members now pushed further into the dungeon, hoping to find something for their troubles. Instead they encountered a hulking Stormfied, who chased them through the dungeon. Unable to fight such a beast at their current power levels, the party rushed to collect the rest of the treasure before sneaking back out of the entrance. The players gained quite a bit of gold, upgraded weapons and a new member, who was given a whip that was grabbed from a crate.

Every one really enjoyed the adventure, and I've been liking how things are working out. The Dungeons and Lasers kits, which I've reviewed before, work best without the walls I've found. It's easier just to lay out the floor tiles than to connect all the walls together. I do like the door frames, they work great to separate out the different parts of the dungeon. My next goal is to work on making combat more interesting, as some of the fighting in the Butterskull Ranch level devolved into two models standing next to each other rolling dice until one finally died. Well, hopefully I figure that out before our next session.
