Curious as to to how I build some of my Age of Sigmar terrain pieces, convert models, or how I plan armies and paint schemes? Then welcome to the Space Dinosaur Tutorials, where I teach you how I do what I do. This brief tutorial covers how I made a second Knight Vexillor from the left over banner bit you get in the kit.
Expanding on last week's converted Lord Celestant, this tutorial looks at slightly more advanced converting than simple head and weapon swaps. But don't worry, this is still fairly simple while teaching a new technique, drilling and pinning, as well as some basic cutting and gluing. No green stuff yet, that will come in a future post.
The basis for this conversion is an Easy to Build Retributor, although any of the paladin models from the Stormcast range will work. I went with the Retributor since they're cheap and came in odd numbers in the starter set, which means that a lot of you may have a spare one floating around that you don't know what to do with.
Other items you'll need are a 1/16 Drill bit, the bit from the Knight Vexillor kit (which you could probably buy separately to save some money), and an extra liberator hammer, and of course some super glue. To prep the Retributor, clip the hammer head off where the haft meets the hand.
Then drill a hole in both the flag base and hand, about 1/16 inch deep, or the diameter of the drill bit for easy measurement. The drill bit I use slots into a screwdriver, which makes the process much easier as you have more leverage.
Now set aside the Retributor and flag and grab the liberator hammer. Clip the haft free, cutting where it meets the hand and the base of the hammer flange. You should be left with the same wrapped leather texture as the remainder of the pole that the Retributor is holding.
You'll have to shave some of the plastic on each end of this nub until it fits snugly into the holes drilled earlier. Dry fit until it fits and is aligned with the pole in the Retributor's hands. Once you've achieved this, glue in place with super glue (or plastic glue if you'd like, but you run the risk of it running and dissolving the texture).
That's it! Really simple, the extra bit from the Liberator hammer serves as a pin, making the joint stronger than if you were to just glue it straight to the Retributor's hand. It also has the added bonus of matching the wrapped leather look of the original great hammer, so it looks seamless.
