Hobby Table: Heldenmarch Handgunners, 6th Edition WHFB Sculpts

Welcome to the first post of 2021 here on the Space Dinosaur Minis blog!

After the Cities of Sigmar barely scraped a lucky win in a 4 player free for all battle, it was time that they received some new painted models, new being relative. The models in question are handgunners from the 6th Edition Warhammer Fantasy Battles starter box, which was Empire vs Orcs.

The handgunners are painted to match the rest of my Heldenmarch force, and as always the yellow is a pain to get right. It takes several layers of Averland Sunset (GW) and then several more of Flash Gitz Yellow (GW) to get the vibrant yellow I'm looking for without covering any details.

Speaking of details, these models still hold up very well in my opinion, even though they came out 20 years ago. The new models have a strange, hunched look to them, partially I think from the almost skin-tight clothes that they wear. The arm "puffs" on the older models give them a regality that in my opinion matches the fact that they are wielding "high-tech" weapons for the setting. The lack of shoes on some of the newer models doesn't help either.

One issue I have is the lack of variety. There's only 3 or 4 different poses, and they are single pose, so you can't even move arms or heads to get a different look. The only reason the handgunner with long rifle looks so different is that it's not even part of the unit.

This is actually an Empire Engineer with long rifle. With their removal from the game in Age of Sigmar, it was either relegate this model to Legends warscrolls or fit him into a different role. Since the old handgunners didn't come with the special long rifle model, I figured it would be a perfect fit. It's a good way to give some of the older Empire models new purpose.
