Age of Sigmar Deathrattle marching across swamps

WIP | Tyranid Bioforms Detected

It's been like what, pshht, I don't know, almost 3 years since my last 40K post? And in the post before that I was talking about how much 40K I was going to play (spoiler alert: none). Where do I find myself since then? A ton of Mordheim, a smattering of other games like 1490 Doom, and a whole fleet of little ships. I guess I did play some Necromunda, which is in the same universe. Hated it though. So why am I picking these models up again? Well, the game group I play with all of the time is planning on slow grow campaign using One Page Rules (OPR) Grimdark Future, which is to say a simplified clone of 40K. I finally had an excuse to get some work done.

Converted Tyranid Prime with Lash Whip

This first guy is a Tyranid Prime, which is the hero version of the Tyranid Warrior. As I mentioned in my first 40K post, I doubled up on the Tyranid half of the Leviathan box, which meant I had two of the Winged Tyranid Prime. I saw no need to have two, so one of them underwent a little surgery. Originally, I was planning on adding a cool cannon (Tyranid weapon names confuse me, but it was a big one). Try as I might I just couldn't get the pose to look right. Then GW went ahead and recently released a Tyranid Prime with Lash Whip model, which got me thinking. I took some extra bits from the warrior kit, readjusted the legs and viola. I had the add the Bonesword because it looked absolutely wicked, and I am a rule of cool player.

Converted Tyranid Termagant

The next little experiment are the Termagants. I have 40 of the easy to build kit, and I plan on leaving 20 of them as is with the default Fleshborers, but for the other 20 I wanted a different mix of weapons. If you buy the new Termagant kit separately, they do have some upgrades, but I don't feel like getting a whole other set of models.

What I did have though are a bunch of old Tyranid kits and models that a friend gave me once upon a time. I had just enough weapons to make a unit of 10 with Devourers and another unit of 10 with Spinefists. If you leave the right arm off, there's a socket ready to go, but on the left side you'll need to clip off the arm and cut out some material, as the connection includes a tab of shoulder armor.

Turns out the old Termagants are a little larger than these new ones, so I had to do some sanding around the ball joint to get them to look right. Otherwise it just looks like your 'gants have been hitting the gym and focusing solely on their rotator cuffs. Just a bit of trimming with clippers then sanding down, trying to keep the same shape more or less.

I'm surprised at how well these older sculpts held up. I mean the actual Termagant bodies don't look good anymore, but these weapons fit right in. The new kit does have some specialty guns in them, not quite sure what I would do in that situation, but for now this is enough to work with.

This campaign "should" be kicking off in the June timeframe, so expect to see some more bugs on here.
