Hobby | Black Seas Bomb Ketch

Before diving further into my Lake Erie project, I need to wrap up the last model I haven't posted about on here from the Analogue Hobby Challenge. This is a Bomb Ketch, a ship made for launching mortar shells at land targets, although in game, you could try to target a ship. But good luck with that.

The model is resin and metal, from Warlord Games. It comes in a pack of 3, which caused me some consternation as I wanted to make sure I painted them up for the faction that would get the most use out of them. Then, it occurred to me that I could just keep the ships generic, that way they could be used by any fleet.

I loosely based the colors on HMS Grenado, although instead of gold for the stern I went with a vibrant blue. I think this gets the idea across that it is still a military vessel, but not tied down to any specific faction. I didn't want to leave it without any kind of pennants or banners, so I took a signal flag and set it atop the mainmast, which will help distinguish it from its counterparts if they ever find themselves on opposing teams.

The sails were a bit wonky, as they gave the same size for both the main and mizzenmast, even though they are not the same size. In hindsight I wish that I had trimmed down the mizzenmast sails a tad more, but that'll have to be incorporated in the next models.

These would be great models for an assault on a fortress, something like the British attack on Fort McHenry during the War of 1812.

  1. Looks fantastic SD, question on the sails are they plastic or resin ? the reason I ask, is both can be bent with heat, so the sails that are slightly oversized you could bend instead of trimming to fit better, will also make it look like the wind is behind them.

    1. Thanks Dave! They're a cardstock actually, they come pre-printed and (usually) pre-cut, so you're kinda stuck with what they give you. Not too bad if the sail is larger than what you need, but especially on the spanker sails, sometimes there's not enough to fit if I curve them so I have to make do with a flat sail. I am able to add some curves to the main square sails at least most of the time.

  2. It's a pretty fantastic work. It took me a second detailed view to notice what you were saying about the sails, so I wouldn't worry much about it

    1. Thanks! Yeah on a visual level it's not too bad, but it actually does make it more difficult to put together.

    1. Thanks! It helps that I'm really liking them! Kinda like how you're just pumping out Quar even though you're a "slow" painter ;)

    1. Thanks Iain! Now I'll be able to lob wildly inaccurate ordinance at targets.

    1. Thanks Ray, glad to see you over here and leaving a comment! No clue as to why google is doing that, nothing seems to be wrong, at least as much as blogger is letting me know.
