Back from space ships to sea ships, I have another Black Seas model completed, also in Royal Navy colors. This time it's a 38-gun frigate, one of their models from the plastic range and provided in the starter set.
This model has very similar properties with the brig I made earlier, just more so. More masts, more details, bigger, thicker, better. Especially the masts. I didn't have nearly as many issues with bending this time around.
This also is the first model with individual boats on the deck. The Merchant Vessel had a single metal piece that included the bars and boats together. Each of these could be stacked however I wanted, or I could pick to have anywhere from 0-4 boats. So that means just a little bit more painting and glueing.
The ratlines were a bit of hassle. I was expecting them to work as is, and they did for the most part. But on the foremast, the acetate ratlines would run into the stays. Ordinarily, I would say something like this is user error, but the model provides holes for the stay lines, so this was always going to happen. It necessitated some trimming on my part.
I also didn't realize that there were different colored sails until now. I had just been using the sails provided in the merchant vessel kit, but seeing as that kit only came with 2 frigate sheets for both ships provided, I had to dip into the starter kit. And I found theses lovely white sails that lend the ship a very crisp and clean look. So now my brig and frigate don't exactly match, but that's fine. I just say that the brig has come back from a long cruise while the frigate is fresh.
Overall, I very much like this kit. It's quite versatile with the customizable figurehead, stern gallery, and the boats. I'm excited to see how changing the color scheme will change the look of the vessel.

DeleteDefinitely beautiful. Frigates certainly combine the best of both smaller and larger vessels, and they look so elegant. You made an outstanding job here!
